Calliopi "Popi" Mavrou is the director of the Lykeion Ellinidon of Kalymnos and has served as its president since 1990. She directs both the Lykeion's dance and choral groups, and they have performed widely throughout Europe as well as in Greece.  She is also the lead vocalist on the Lykeion’s CD of the traditional songs of Kalymnos. The song workshop will be informal. Popi will lead a sing-along of the “nisiotika” -- songs of the Greek islands -- focusing on songs of Kalymnos and other islands in the Dodecanese. Some familiarity with the Greek language is highly recommended, but all interested singers are welcome to participate.

Well, at the risk of making Kosta even more jealous...Popi will also be teaching a dance class at Kypseli Greek Dance Center, Pasadena, on Friday, May 7. Yes, she has a very dynamic and charismatic personality as well as being a dance authority. We are indebted to Louise and Jozef Bilman for inviting and hosting Popi in Los Angeles.
